PDF Print E-mail

Chancellor Alistair Darling laid out the government's budget today setting the stage for the economic battle ground in the lead up to this years election. Some of the key points of the budget include a cut to stamp duty for first-time home buyers as well as tax increases for the wealthy.

A review of media and online feedback shows that the budget has been met with mixed responses. The below graph illustrates sentiment of users talking about the budget online this afternoon (provided by Social Mention).

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg labelled the budget a "footnote to 13 years of failure" whilst claiming both Labour and the Tories were "in denial" about the scale of cuts needed. The Tories claimed Labour had made a "complete mess" of the economy.

Labour are forecasting growth of 3-3.5% in 2011 however they forewarned that after this, as the economy stabilises, the government would need to make drastic cuts in spending that would be the "toughest for decades".

A full summary of the key points from todays budget can be found on the BBC website.
